In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Leeks are known for their ability to regulate qi circulation. They also help to expel cold and regulate blood circulation.
In general the ancient Chinese medical texts cite that Leeks enter the lung, stomach, spleen, and liver. Furthermore Leeks are considered to be warm in temperature. The flavor is sweet, sour, and pungent.
Leeks also help to promote sweating and act as a diuretic. They can be helpful for sinus infection, upper respiratory infection, allergies, difficulty urinating, intestinal worms, and certain types of boils and lesions [22].
For a common cold make tea from chopped onion and add a few slices of ginger. For sinus infection rinse the nasal passages with saline solution, then with a cotton ball apply extracted leek juice to cotton balls and leave in the nose. For cough, mucus, and upper respiratory infections put slices of onion over the nose like a mask and inhale for 30 minutes. Or steam the onion and apply it as a warm poultice on the chest area. Cover to keep warm and leave for 20-30 minutes. For difficulty urinating mash and steam some onion, the apply to the area just below the navel (Ren 4) as a hot compress. For intestinal worms in children mash onion and mix with 1-2 tablespoons of sesame oil and eat on an empty stomach twice per day for three consecutive days. For boils, mash onion and mix with vinegar and apply directly to the lesions. [22]
