In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Lettuce is known for its ability to regulate qi circulation and calm the spirit. It also helps to clear heat, resolve dampness, reduce swelling, soften hardness, and regulate water circulation.

In general the ancient Chinese medical texts cite that it enters the stomach and large intestine. Furthermore Lettuce is considered to be cool in temperature. The flavor is slightly sweet (bland) and bitter. This vegetable is considered to be mild in action [22].

For skin lesion, insect bites, and/or sores with pus apply mashed lettuce and change the poultice three times per day. Drink one cup of lukewarm lettuce juice, three times daily. For breast abscess make a poultice of lettuce and dandelion juice. Drink the juice and also apply it externally with a gauze pad. [22]

The more bitter lettuce, such as endive and romaine, are cooler and more drying in nature.
