In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Spinach is known for its ability to tonify blood and yin. It also helps to clear heat, promote urination, and lubricate the intestines. Stomach is considered to be tonifying for all of the organs in the body [22].

In general the ancient Chinese medical texts cite that it enters the stomach, large intestine, and liver. Furthermore Spinach is considered to be cool in temperature. The flavor is sweet.

While spinach can be helpful for constipation, it should not be used by those with diarrhea or a history of kidney stones due to the fact that it contains oxalic acid. Spinach does not mix well with tofu or dairy products due the high levels of calcium in those foods. High levels of calcium and oxalic acid can lead to kidney stones [22].

For acute conjunctivitis (pink eye) simmer spinach and chrysanthemum flowers to make a tea. For night blindness drink fresh spinach juice twice daily. For diabetes boil tea from spinach and chicken gizzard and drink one cup three times daily. For constipation, urinary obstruction, or headache spinach soup may be helpful. [22]
