In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Lima beans (also known as butter beans) are known for their ability to tonify yin. Lima beans can also help to tonify blood, clear heat, resolve dampness, and calm the spirit[22].

In general the ancient texts cite that they enter the Lung and Liver. Like all legumes listed in the beans category, the flavor of Lima beans (butter beans) is sweet, and they are considered to be cool in temperature.

Like many beans, butter beans are toxic if not boiled for 10-15 minutes. In one case all the people who ate falafel made with dried butter beans (rather than traditional broad beans or chickpeas) that had been soaked but not boiled, then ground, made into patties, and shallow fried, had serious food poisoning

Lima beans may help to resolve fatigue and symptoms related to allergies such as sinus problems, hives, and rashes. They may also help to lower cholesterol and to relieve constipation, anxiety, insomnia, and anemia. For fatigue and anemia (blood deficiency) puree lima beans with roasted garlic and fresh basil to be eaten between meals. For insomnia eat soup make from lima beans and other calming foods such as turkey and sage. For allergic reaction due to sulfites make broth from boiling equal portions of lima and mung beans, and drink 3 cups daily.[22]
