In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Walnut is known for its ability to tonify qi, yang, and jing. It also helps to expel cold and resolve phlegm. Sources also say that walnuts help to tonify the kidney, strengthen the back, astringe the lungs, relieve asthma, lubricate the intestines, and reduce cholesterol[22].
In general the ancient Chinese medical texts cite that it enters the lung, small intestine, large intestine, and kidney. The flavor of Walnut is sweet, and it is considered to be warm in temperature.
Walnuts may also be helpful in cases of erratic or rebellious qi. They may be helpful for conditions such as impotence, sexual dysfunction, infertility, frequent urination, back pain, leg pain, kidney stones, cough, and constipation. For impotence and kidney weakness eat twenty walnuts per day for 1 month. For back pain with cold, or cold type arthritis, take ground walnuts with red wine. [22]
For cough with constipation take equal portions of sesame seed, walnut seed, and dried mulberries. Mash them together to make a paste. Roll into small pills and take three pills 3x per day.[22]
For kidney stones take up to 120 grams of ground walnuts and add 120g of brown sugar. Roast the mixture with sesame oil and take 1/4 of the mixture 4 times per day[22].
