In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Watermelon is known for its ability to clear heat, detoxify the body, clear summer heat, and regulate water.

In general the ancient Chinese medical texts cite that it enters the Stomach, Heart, and Urine Bladder. The flavor of Watermelon is sweet, and it is considered to be cold in temperature.

Watermelon can help to resolve heat related sores on lips such as 'fever blisters', quench thirst, relieve irritability, and difficult urination. Since it regulates water, it may also be helpful for conditions related to dampness and heat such as jaundice and edema. For edema with nephritis (kidney inflammation) boil tea from the rind of the melon and the melon itself. For jaundice boil a tea from the rind of the melon combined with red beans. For fluid in the abdomen make tea from the skin of watermelon, squash, and winter melon. For constipation boil tea from watermelon seeds, or grind the seeds into meal and take with warm water.[22]

Contraindications: Watermelon should not be used with cold conditions, excessive urination, or weakness of the stomach [22]. Watermelon seeds are difficult to digest which can cause the stomach to produce excessive amounts of acid.
