In terms of Chinese nutrition Asian Pear, also referred to as pear-apple, is cold in temperature and has a flavor that is sweet. It enters into the lung, kidney, and urine bladder.
Asin pear is appropriate for cough due to lung heat and can help to resolve phlegm. It also calms the spirit, alleviates restlessness, lubricates the throat and lungs, helps to detoxify the body, descends the qi to stop cough, and promotes urination [22].
For cough with bronchitis core the pear, steam, and eat 3-4 times daily. Adding scallions will help add pungency and help to alleviate cold. For cough with yellow phlegm core the pear and fill it with three grams of a Chinese herb fritillaria bulb [See also: Chuan bei Mu]. Add a bit of rock sugar or brown sugar and steam for 30 minutes before eating. [22]
For acute loss of voice remove the peel and juice 2-3 pears. Add two teaspoons of honey. For nausea and belching core the pear and insert 10-15 cloves, steam, then remove the cloves and eat the pear.[22]
Domestic pears have similar qualities to asian pear, but are more mild.
Contraindications: Do not use Asian pear when there are conditions of cold in the stomach and spleen such as diarrhea or cold extremities. Asian pear is also contraindicated during pregnancy and should not be used in cases of anemia. [22]
