    Qi defiency is a way of saying that the life force / energy of a specific organ or system is relatively weak compared to others. For instance heart qi deficiency means that the heart energy is not strong, and may show up as fatigue, lassitude, even palpitations. Spleen qi deficiency is a diagnosis indicating that the Spleen-Pancreas system is relatively weak, and may show up as gas, bloating, loose stool, and fatigue.

    In some cases, such as in the case of prolonged insomnia, an overall qi deficiency could exist, but in most cases there is a mixture of excesses and deficiencies. For instance one very common diagnosis is Liver (excess) with Spleen (deficiency). This is simply called "liver overacting on spleen" and means that stress and poor liver function are adversely affecting the digestion (spleen-pancreas matrix).


        Foods to Avoid:

    Foods to Avoid mainly include foods and herbs that MOVE qi or blood. For the most part these are pungent foods like garlic, onion, leeks, peppermint, and ginger. Because these foods promote sweating they are great to expel wind, but they should be used cautiously when significant qi deficiency is present.
